Four years of ALTopedia
April 28, 2022
ALTopedia first fired up its servers four years ago on April 29, 2018. (technically, that's tomorrow, but I'll be moving and without internet access for a bit) The site was in a pretty primitive form back then. The framework was just barely there for people to find and post activities for their English classes, but fortunately it kept growing one user at a time and one update at a time.
As I write this now, there are over 1700 activities on the site, posted by hundreds of users. Visitor counts are higher than they've ever been, and new users are coming in with fresh spins on some of the existing activities on the site. The site feels healthy and active, and it's thanks to all of you kind folks.
Looking ahead, there are a lot more features in various stages of planning and development. My next big focus is the Subscriber system, which is mostly in place code-wise but is going to require quite a lot of paperwork and administrative procedure. The goal is to fund the site through a direct relationship with users rather than drowning everyone in ads.
I've added a direct feedback form you can use on the Contact page so you can send any feedback, bug reports, or other inquiries through that if you don't want to go to the trouble of writing an email. I'm also experimenting with removing the Top 10 activities display from the front page. I think I'll probably bring it back at some point, but I wonder about the incentives it creates. There are a number of pages that are in need of redesigns, and the front page is certainly one of them. What sort of information do you want to see on the front page?
I also managed to code in one new user system for the anniversary, but I'll leave it to you to discover!
Thanks again to all you kind, hardworking people who have made the site into what it is today! Enjoy the rest of the spring!
