Introduce your Classmates

Students practice pronouns by writing introductions about themselves and others.

This is a simpler version of the Englipedia activity, "Who is your classmate?"

Students first write an introduction about themselves, then change papers and write a new introduction by filling in the information provided at the top and using the appropriate pronouns.

This activity can take awhile depending on how you divide it up and share it. I've done it in two classes where we do the writing sections in one class and then the next class we do the actual sharing and quiz section. I've also done all of it in one class by taking some time saving options, but I think you need at least 20 minutes to best utilize this activity.

Here's how to run it:

  1. Give students the worksheet and check the meaning of 1-5. Have them fill out their introduction in the "Your Answer" column. For number 5 they make their own sentence so I included an idea box but they can use things outside of that box if they want. Finally, make sure they write their name in the "My name is" box! Double check this because it's needed for the quiz part!
  2. Collect the papers. Shuffle them and pass them out randomly. Check to make sure no one has their own.
  3. Have the students make an introduction for the classmate whose paper they received. Students pick the proper pronouns and re-fill in the introduction according to the answers at the top of the page. Make sure they understand they don't use their own introduction!
  4. Have the students fold the paper along the dotted line. Now students read the introduction they have as if it is a quiz. Start the quiz by saying, "Who is this?" or you can change it to "Do you know him/her?" if you want to have another instance of pronouns.

Variations on how to approach the quiz section include:
You can have each student go one by one reading the introduction which they rewrote and have volunteers guess who it is.
You can re-collect the completed introductions and have students pick from the pile of them at the teacher's desk in the front of the room.
You can have the students give the quiz in pairs or groups.
You could read some completed introductions yourself and have students guess if time is really tight.

For a bit of fun, I usually throw in an introduction of myself. I've done this every time I've done this activity and the kids always love it.

If you want to make it more focused on pronouns and they've practiced it before, I would suggest leaving the pronoun areas blank and having the students write them in themselves.
