Let's Compare!

Comparative and superlative presentation and activity, using movies and movie characters!

Hi hi hi :)

This is a presentation and accompanying activity for introducing comparative and superlative adjectives and sentences.

I used this for my JHS 2nd years.

Introducing the concept by starting off with adjectives as a movie category, used to describe an 'award' that will be given to the right answer or the class' choice in votes!

This presentation is interactive!

The movie categories are as follows:
1. Great (Great / Greater / Greatest)
2. New (New / Newer / Newest)
3. Long (Long / Longer / Longest)
4. Clever (More clever than ~ / The most clever) (Could also change to smart / smarter / smartest).
5. Interesting (More interesting than ~ / The most interesting!)

  1. GREAT This category asks the class which Studio Ghibli movie is GREAT.

Giving students a moment to think about it and get excited! I usually present my favourite movie, or my JTE and I translate some of the movie titles (This usually interests the class, learning about the differences and discrepancies in film names).

The first question: Which Studio Ghibli movie is greater?
(1) Students can vote on which movie they believe is greater! You can proceed with the film they choose by clicking on the star behind the movie poster.
(2) The question will continue but with the film they chose and two new Studio Ghibli films. You can proceed with the film they choose by clicking on the star behind the movie poster.
(3) The award will be given to the movie with the highest votes!
(4) During the award ceremony, the adjective form, and addition of [-er] and [-est] is highlighted.
(5) Be sure you click the RED ARROW at the bottom righthand corner.

  1. NEW This category asks the class to think about which movie has the newest release date. I have changed the movies a few times to a movie that is releasing that day, or are a day or two apart! But you could chose older movies, or movies all released in the same month. It's your preference!

Give students a moment to think about it and get excited! I sometimes ask if the students have watched the films, or are going to watch it at the theatre!

The second question: Which movie is newer, (Movie 1), (Movie 2), or (Movie 3)?
(1) Students can vote on which movie they believe is newer!
(2) I like to reveal the dates one by one to get the anticipation and excitement going!
(3) The award will be given to the newest movie!
(4) During the award ceremony, the adjective form, and addition of [-er] and [-est] is highlighted.

  1. LONG This category asks the class to think about which movie is longer in length (movie minutes). I have chosen some of my favorites, and they are the usual lengthy films we know and love.

Give students a moment to think about it and get excited! I sometimes ask if the students have watched the films!

The third question: Which movie is longer, Avengers: Endgame, The Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of the Ring), or Avatar: The Way of Water?
(1) Students can vote on which movie they believe is longer!
(2) I like to reveal the length one by one to get the anticipation and excitement going!
(3) The award will be given to the longest movie!
(4) During the award ceremony, the adjective form, and addition of [-er] and [-est] is highlighted.

  1. CLEVER This category asks the class which anime character is more clever!

This slide has the three characters rolling up in style on the red carpet. Reveal the characters one by one!

The fourth question: Which character is more clever?
(1) Students can vote on which character they believe is more clever!
(2) You can proceed with the character they choose by clicking on their names which are highlighted in the title question.
(3) The award will be given to the character with the highest votes!
(4) During the award ceremony a new way to compare using MOST CLEVER/ MORE CLEVER is highlighted.
(5) Be sure you click the RED ARROW at the bottom righthand corner.

  1. INTERESTING This category asks the class to think about which movie characters are more interesting. But you could change any characters to your liking or characters that are important, recognizable, or liked by your students! It's your preference!

Give students a moment to think about it and get excited!
(1) Ask the question!
(2) Students can vote!
(3) I use these slides to practice speaking out loud more.

Finally, the presentation ends with a review of the points made. I practice changing the adjectives with the class.

Let's compare.

  1. Compare with the different adjectives!
  2. The students are given five (5) difference adjectives and they are to change them into comparative and superlative. (e.g. Big, bigger, biggest) along with examples of what is big, bigger and the biggest of the three (e.g. Bear -> Rhino -> Blue Whale).

  3. This is where students can work with a partner. Writing down their favourite movie, subject, animal, and sport. Then comparing with their partner, they decide based on their answers which of their answers are more interesting or the most interesting. This is great speaking and writing practice!

I use Google Slides and Google Docs. The link to both the presentation and document are down below.
