Four years of ALTopedia
April 28, 2022
ALTopedia first fired up its servers four years ago on April 29, 2018. (technically, that's tomorrow, but I'll be moving and without internet access for a bit) The site was in a pretty primitive form back then. The framework was just barely there for people to find and post activities for their English classes, but fortunately it kept growing one user at a time and one update at a time.
As I write this now, there are over 1700 activities on the site, posted by hundreds of users. Visitor counts are higher than they've ever been, and new users are coming in with fresh spins on some of the existing activities on the site. The site feels healthy and active, and it's thanks to all of you kind folks.
Looking ahead, there are a lot more features in various stages of planning and development. My next big focus is the Subscriber system, which is mostly in place code-wise but is going to require quite a lot of paperwork and administrative procedure. The goal is to fund the site through a direct relationship with users rather than drowning everyone in ads.
I've added a direct feedback form you can use on the Contact page so you can send any feedback, bug reports, or other inquiries through that if you don't want to go to the trouble of writing an email. I'm also experimenting with removing the Top 10 activities display from the front page. I think I'll probably bring it back at some point, but I wonder about the incentives it creates. There are a number of pages that are in need of redesigns, and the front page is certainly one of them. What sort of information do you want to see on the front page?
I also managed to code in one new user system for the anniversary, but I'll leave it to you to discover!
Thanks again to all you kind, hardworking people who have made the site into what it is today! Enjoy the rest of the spring!
Happy anniversary, ALTopedia🥳 🎉 Thanks admin and coders for running the site. This has always been my life saver since I started working as an ALT. Cheers to more years!
Happy Anniversary ALTOPEDIA Thank you all for your hard work and dedication.
Here Here!!!
"THE" Alt resource and community. Thank you!!
THank you so much for the work you do in keeping this site running!
Congratulations! Thanks for your hard work. I like the top 10 as I like to browse it for new ideas when I have a low class day. Perhaps a popular recent activites list instead (of the last last month/2 months/3 months in a random order) to give the newer stuff exposure?
I'd like to see the top ten list come back again someday and in some form. I'd be interested to see how much it changes while its invisible to us. Maybe as fixed lists that get posted as part of seasonal update articles, such as '2021's Top 10' or 'Spring 2022's Top 10'
I would like to see the top list back in some form! My school net blocks everything so I spend a long time just opening random resources out of curiosity.
There's an interesting idea. Random spotlighted activity (or activities) of the day (or week). There is so much on the site now and I suspect a lot of good stuff gets buried (especially stuff that is just tagged review or flexible). The top ten only highlights the most thumbs up but I'd bet a lot of the most heavily used stuff only has one or two thumbs up tops.
I`d like to be able to add my liked activities to separate folders or search them. I love saving fun activities in my liked activities months in advance but I can never find them later.
