Conversation Puzzle

In groups, students rearrange sentences to make a conversation. The first team to finish wins!

Write or choose a conversation with around 6-7 sentences. My textbook has extra "challenge" conversations, so I use these for this activity. Print out the conversation and cut out each of the sentences in individual strips. Each group needs a full set of sentences, so I usually print and cut out 6 copies for a class of 30 students.

Put the students into groups. Each group gets a set of sentences. The goal is to rearrange the sentences back into the correct order as fast as possible. The first group to finish is the winner. If some teams are struggling, I sometimes let the finished teams walk around and help them. The JTE and I will also walk around and provide help or hints.

After every group finishes the puzzle, the JTE and I demo the full conversation. Then, I put the students into pairs and they practice reading the conversation with their partner.

My students really like this activity and it's a good way to get them thinking about the structure and flow of an English conversation along with practicing key expressions from our unit.

I have included an example of a conversation from my textbook that I used in a past puzzle formatted to be cut out when printed.
