New Horizon 3 Unit 1-2 Review

Review Kahoot of Unit 1 and 2 of New Horizon 3.

I thought I'd share this here in case anyone was looking for a quick/easy review game that takes up most of the class.

It does use a paid version of Kahoot, so I don't think it can be duplicated/edited without that, but you can play it as is without an account.

It contains a couple questions per grammar point (with a heavy focus on present perfect/present perfect continuous since a lot of my students really struggled there) and a little bit of vocabulary thrown between grammar questions to break them up a little.

On questions a good chunk of the students found difficult and got wrong, pause and go over the grammar and why the ones they chose would not be the correct one.

There are a lot of questions in the quiz, so you might end up having to skip the last few if it's running a little longer than you expected. It really depends on the class and how long you need to spend discussing grammar they struggled with.

How many players can play in this game?

@claireeee It says on Kahoot when you launch the game, "Play with up to 2000 players".

Thank you for sharing this. I just want to offer some feedback and a caveat to others who might use this Kahoot. My JTE told me that some of this Kahoot contradicts the textbook. One example is "I have played soccer for many years." I didn't notice anything wrong with that, but she pointed out that "I have been playing soccer for many years" is correct. She said that the textbook says "I have ______ ..." sentences don't work with certain verbs, like "played." After she mentioned it, I realized that "I have been playing soccer for many years" does sound better, but I never would have considered it incorrect without her bringing it to me attention.

In "I have played", the tense is present perfect simple. In "I have been playing", the tense is present perfect continuous. Both are correct English grammar but I do think you are right @KGJohnson11 that in the scenario of playing soccer, if the person still plays soccer, i.e. if it's a continuing action, present perfect continuous is the better choice. I think English speakers tend to use both pretty interchangeably though, right?

Yeah in that situation both are correct, I had this discussion with some other ALT's I work with because our teachers had been asking us what the difference is. Both can be used in that scenario in English, especially if you have been doing something for a long time (I have been playing soccer for many years, I have played soccer for many years) these can be used interchangeably. A great example one of the ALT's gave was (I have worked at City Hall for 5 years VS I have been working at City Hall for 5 years) for the continuous version as English speakers we assume that they obviously haven't been working at the company 24 hours a day for 5 years straight, therefore you can use either form. But in the case of a short period of time we would use the continuous form, i.e. (I have been playing soccer for 2 hours). Hopefully this helps!
