Childhood Memory Interviews

Lesson outline to practice the "when" conjunctive

Hi guys, this is a simple outline for practicing the "when" conjunctive with JHS 2年生. The goal of this lesson is to have students talk about their childhood using "When I was 8 years old~". It includes speaking, writing, and listening practice.

LESSON FLOW

  • Open with your usual greeting to start class. Since this lesson is a little short on content, I also did a warm up game. (God bless @nickteacher's Zombie Game.)

  • Start by giving a short demo speech in front of the class. I talked about when I lived in Thailand using the target sentence. (When I was 8 years old, I lived in Thailand.) This sentence is just an example to introduce the grammar, so you can use any fact about yourself you like. Pause here to check meaning. This is a good spot for your JTE to jump in with grammar explanations.

  • Once the grammar is solidified, continue with the following examples about yourself. These are the same questions from the worksheet:
-When I was 8 years old, my favorite food was ~ .
-When I was 8 years old, my favorite color was ~ .
-When I was 8 years old, my favorite TV show was ~.
    -When I was 8 years old, I wanted to be a ~.

  • Do a version with your JTE's answers as well, if you like. Students really got a kick of hearing about us when we were younger!

  • Now it's the students' turn. Hand out the worksheet and practice reading the questions together. Refer back to your answers as examples for how to construct the sentence. Give students about 8-10 minutes to write about themselves on the top half of the worksheet.

  • When students have finished writing, have them interview their partner with the same questions. Students will write down their partner's answers as full sentences on the bottom half of the worksheet. (Another 8-10 minutes)

PART TWO

  • You could very well end the activity there, especially if you have textbook content to cover as well. However, I continued with another version of the activity using "When you are __," or "When it's __, what do you do?"

  • Following the same structure as above, show students a demonstration with you and the JTE. Check meaning and grammar with the students, pointing out the differences from the last exercise. Then have them do the worksheet with new questions. These questions are:
-When you are free, what do you do?
-When you are happy, what do you do?
-When you go to Sushiro, what do you order?
-When it's sunny, what do you do?

NOTES
- I've uploaded the worksheets I made, even though they're pretty basic. Feel free to alter the interview questions to better suit the level / interests of your class.
- Also, if anyone has a good idea for how to evolve this lesson and make it longer (instead of basically doing the same activity twice) let me know!
