Activity

Dictionary Dash

Students look up words that have a connected meaning.

  1. there are 6 cards (A4 size paper) with a main word at the top and 4-5 other words to choose from.
  2. The goal of the students is to find the word that has a similar meaning to the main word.
  3. Wen they find the correct answer they wright the word (also the Japanese meaning)and the corresponding alphabet for that choice in the box.
  4. After completing the 6 challenge cards, the final word is the one created from the alphabet from the answers.

This is a group activity of 5-6 students and all students should have a dictionary (there may be enough in the school library)
Teamwork is key so I tell students to split the work and look up separate words and then share what they find.

I have all the challenge papers placed in the front and when a team finds the answer, 1 student in the group will bring the challenge paper and their worksheet to the front to be checked. If the answer is correct they take the next challenge paper to their group.

My school has a lot of different color paper so each was a different color.
Make sure students don't take memos on the challenge papers.
