Materials Needed:
- Blindfold, Flashcards
Detailed Explanation:
- After reviewing building names and directions, chose one student to be it and put the blindfold on him/her before handing out flashcards of the various buildings to the remaining students (best if there is one card for each student). After handing out the cards, tell those students to pick a spot in the classroom and not to move.
- Spin the blindfolded student once or twice, and then have him/her ask, "Where is the...?" The person holding that flashcard holds it up, and the other students call out directions to the blindfolded person, guiding him/her around the desks and chairs to that destination.
- The student holding the destination card becomes blindfolded and everyone else switches cards for the next round.
Variations:
- After the blindfolded student gets to their destination, they can try to guess who is holding that card (but this has nothing to do with the subject matter of the lesson).
Tips/Cautions:
- This can get noisy, so watch the volume level.
- Quiet kids may simply continue to stay silent, rather than participate, so keep an eye on them.
- I usually follow the blindfolded student around the classroom, helping to avoid any collision with desk corners and making sure that they are actually going straight (rather than on an angle).
