1) Information about Halloween and its origins. Usually, I only post information in English but make it so that students can lift up the paper to see difficult words in Japanese underneath. I anticipated that this time they wouldn't know a significant number of the words, and I want them to learn about the cultural information so I put the Japanese underneath (with the help of 3 different translators...let's hope it generally makes sense).
2) A short quiz about the names of Halloween creatures in English. Students lift the pictures to see the answers underneath. I also printed a QR code for a longer Kahoot! version of a Halloween creatures quiz.
3) A general Halloween quiz. To play this game, students write the answers in a grid. The squares which are shaded green spell a Halloween themed word in English. If they bring the grid to me, they can get some Halloween sweets.
4) Competition - students make a Halloween themed comic strip in English. Last year I did a writing competition but I don't think it was very accessible to all of the students, so I'm hoping because this will be shorted sections of English and many students enjoy drawing that it will attract more entries.
Materials (green felt and tinsel) are from Daiso.
I know it's a little cluttered looking and it's definitely not as aesthetically pleasing as I'd like, but hopefully this might give a bit of inspiration to anyone who's stuck for Halloween noticeboard ideas!
I can tell someone else has canva judging by the blushing ghost haha! I love this board idea, and it has given me plenty of ideas as well. Daiso isn't ready for the amount of novelty halloween stuff I am about to buy lol! What is the prize you have for the kids? I have elementary school, but I want to do something similar I think; maybe having them pick a spooky bug to draw and talk about it for a prize
@jbjoker2 Yes, Canva is a lifesaver! Thank you, I'm so glad :) For the competition last year I bought some cute notebooks and lots of sweets/snacks and made up little gift bag for each winner, so I think I'll do the same this year! I'd like to be able to give a voucher for Book Off or something like that but I'd have to make it just one winner to do that.
Good luck with your board - the spooky bug idea is fantastic!
@mabushii_hikari Oh, Canva is my hero haha! Those are some excellent little prizes to give to the students, wonderful idea! I may also grab some pencil caps and things of games I know they like just for that added motivation. Thanks again for the wonderful idea!!
This is so awesome!! Could you please upload the doc with the English and Japanese for the halloween and trick or treat history? I'd love to use it on my board!!
@AnpanSwag Thank you :) I added the file
