I found that my students really enjoy learning surprising facts about their teachers! So, this is a fun way to practice "Does he/she...?" questions and answers. After the quiz, I then like to challenge the students to write their own questions.
Note: the quiz attached here is meant to work as an example of the quiz structure, but you can use it as a template/improve it by making a copy and editing it!
Before class: ask 1年生 teachers about hobbies/languages/pets etc (it may be easier to have your JTE help with this). You can use this information to make your quiz. I would reccomend having 5-9 questions, depending on how long you want to run the quiz for. If possible, try to start with easier questions and build up to more difficult ones :)
For the level up challenge, you will also need a family photo.
The Quiz: Students answer questions.
1) Split students into groups and hand out whiteboards and markers. Divide the board into a table to keep track of each group's score.
2) Give the first question. Before I give the students time to write their answer, I go over how to answer the question. I like to write "Yes" and "No" on the board and then ellicit the full response from the students ("Yes, she/he does." "No, she/he doesn't.") When students have finished, get them to hold up their answers before you reveal the correct answer. If they are correct, their team can get a point!
3) Go through the rest of your questions. If you want, you can give the winning team stickers/a small prize.
Level up: Students ask questions. Yes = 1 point, No = 0 points
1) Introduce your family with a family photo.
2) Tell the students its their turn to ask YOU a question. Choose a family member and demonstrate with the JTE. You want the students to see that the point is to ask a question and have you answer "yes". For example:
Does your mother speak English? Yes, she does. = 1 point
Does your mother speak Japanese? No, she doesn't. = 0 points
3) Give students about 2 minutes to write one question. When they finish, go through the questions, giving points as you do.
4) Repeat with another family member. You can play as many rounds as you'd like.

Feel free to make a copy and edit as you see fit!
This was great thanks for the idea!
I will use this powerpoint on Tuesday, September 17th 2024. Thanks very much to its creator. I checked with my JTE and she said the powerpoint looks great to our first graders.
