DETAILED EXPLANATION:
- Meet with the JTE before class if you are unsure the students will have a hard time with some of the words in the story.
- Read the story below and pull out all prepositions and practice them with the students before doing the activity. Also, make sure they know all the nouns in the story.
- Once you are confident the students know all the vocabulary in the story, have the students close their eyes and put their heads down on their desks.
Then, read the story:
- "You are in a dark room. In the room, you see a table. By the table, you see some chairs. You see some coffee cups on the table. You see a door. You go to the door and open it. Outside the door, there is an animal. You say, "Hello" to the animal. You walk past it. Then, you see two roads. The road on the left goes into a rice field. The road to the right goes into trees. Choose a road. You see a lake. There is a small boat in the water. What color is the boat? Also, there is a person swimming. You walk around the lake. You see a house. What color is the house? You open the door and walk inside. The End!"
- Hand out the worksheet and have the students complete the questions about their vision
Finally, explain the meaning of their vision.
The chairs = the number of children you will have.
The coffee cups = the number of boyfriends or girlfriends you will have.
The animal = The type of boy you like.
The roads: rice field = optimist (rakkan shugisha) / trees = pessimist (hikkan shugisha)
The boat = no meaning!
The person = you
The house = your future house
The color of the house = your favorite color
TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:
- The optimal environment for this activity is a darkened room. If there isn't one available, close the curtains, turn off the lights and have the students close their eyes and lay their heads down on the table.
- It is really important the students understand every sentence of your story. Have them raise their hand if they don’t understand a particular sentence. Their eyes should be shut so you shouldn’t have the issue of embarrassment. -This activity is all about having the right type of environment before you start it, so having a rowdy activity right before this activity is not a good idea.
