This lesson is a combination of Here We Go! 1 unit 4, part 1 and 2 (Who and Pronouns).
The first part of the lesson is a series of teacher led 3-hint quizzes using popular characters. (There is a city mascot as one of these characters, so please change it to your own city mascot if you'd like!) The first 2 slides of the powerpoint introduce the game and explain the rules, and the 1st character is to make sure they understand the rules (and helps you find how to play with the students as well!).
The slide with the 3 hints has them appear one at a time (on click) to give you a chance to check for understanding with the students (and have them repeat the sentence if you or your JTE would like). After going over the 3 hints, "Who's that character?" will appear at the bottom. To start the timer to have the image fade in (it fades in after 10 seconds of the allotted 20 second guessing time), click one more time after this sentence appears. Once the image fully fades in, have the students answer!
The powerpoint has 12 characters (including the example) total, so you can add or remove as you need for your classtime. The final character is a fun challenge and references an old Pokemon joke!
After the powerpoint, students will have a chance to make their own 3-hint quiz. There is a half sheet printout for the students to use to make their 3-hint quizzes. Many students will try to pick popular characters/people, but some do pick some very obscure people, so have fun with it! Make sure you and your JTE walk around to help students. If time allows, have them share their quizzes in a group and pick the best one! The best ones can share their quiz with the class.
This activity was a blast for the students. The discussion/thinking time really had them working together to try and guess what the answer was and they had even more fun when they tried to guess other student's characters. While the Pokemon references were lost, they had a lot of fun guessing on the Purin/Jigglypuff quiz.
