Hey yall,
I made a post for this lesson 2 years ago here, but I am posting this again as the slideshow has been updated. This lesson is pretty heavy, so I recommend for SH as well as for classes you feel comprehend + you have a good relationship with.
This lesson is a overview of black history in the scope of the American timeline, starting from the slave trade, to segregation and civil rights, and ending in modernity. In this version, I skim though the history portion, mainly using the history as a jumping board to build on other idea.
The overall goal of this lesson is to share black history, but also to encourage students to think about the history of other peoples as well as consider how the history/country of Japan is viewed abroad.
I start with the slave trade to introduce the idea of a diaspora, and I asked students if they know about the Japanese Diaspora (Nikkei community). This helps them relate more to the content matter. I then introduce segregation and the civil rights movement, to ask an open ended question of whether students think racism (within Japan/Abroad is over or not (I don't give an answer, it is for them to think about).
After quickly running thru the history, I share with the students my reasons on why I think learning about different histories and cultures are important:
Reason 1 being that in the age of information, so much culture is exchanged through many groups. I then show them ways Japanese culture influenced black culture and well as ways that Japanese culture was influence by black culture. This is to bridge the gap to segway into my
Reason 2, which is that history is everywhere: There is black history in Japan, in the same way that there is Japanese history in America, etc. I give examples and show that if we do not know the history, the history may be lost, or misrepresented.
I end the class with a discussion of how my student feel Japan may be represented abroad, and if they deem these perceptions to be true and false.
Like I said, it is a bit much and heavy, so I highly recommend running this by your JTE for support, and understanding your class(es) as well.
There are also remnants of slides I made so you can use your discretion on what to use.
