MATERIALS NEEDED (not included):

  • Family cards. It is easier if the cards have magnets attached to the back of them.

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  • Split students into teams.
  • After reviewing the family flashcards, draw as many family trees as there are teams on the blackboard but leave the trees blank. Place the family cards on the blackboard's chalk tray. Make sure the cards have magnets. Don't worry if it is crowded. It lets the students dig through them and they will have more fun.
  • Choose a student from each team to go first. Call out a family member. The students race to the blackboard, find the family member, and puts the family member in the right section of the tree.
  • Point goes to the winner.
  • Change team runners and play again.

VARIATIONS:

  • Sometimes the running part gets dangerous. Instead of running to the board try hopping or crab-walking.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Make sure that the flashcards you use for the game and the flashcards you use to review are the same. Demonstrate a family tree.
