I do this presentation with a quiz game. I explained how I play it here:
https://www.altopedia.net/activities/4863-australian-history-quiz
With this presentation, I like to draw pictures on the blackboard with chalk, and explain extra stuff to make it more interesting (use if you want):
- I write how fast Usain Bolt can run on the board (44km/h) and explain that the wombat is almost just as fast!
- I draw Australia and explain the crocs are only in the north because it is hot in the north (southern hemisphere).
- I draw the neck and head of a cassowary above my head (I'm 180cm tall) to show how tall it is.
- I draw a face wearing one of those helmets with spikes on it to keep magpies away and explain why magpies swoop animals and people (to protect eggs)
- At the end of the kookaburra video, I explain that in the morning at 4am there's always like 10 of these cheeky buggers laughing outside my window lol.
- I also draw a spider web on the board, put a cross on it, then draw a spider in a hole underground (to explain the funnel web)
- Also with the funnel web, Explain that in Australia there is no Genkan, so a lot of people leave their shoes outside (because they're stinky) and sometimes spiders go in the shoes. So, people have to check inside them before they put them on. (I take off one of my shoes, and use gestures to help explain)
- Also Also, after explaining the shoe situation, tell them that if this spider (the funnel web) bites you, you will DIE ......... (but If you go to the hospital you might be ok).
*** Some stats on the presentation are not 100% accurate, they may be rounded numbers or slightly exaggerated to make it more interesting for the kids. ***
