Learning CIVICS in English

An interactive PowerPoint presentation and activity for learning about CIVICS. Students will campaign and vote with their ideas on what they would change about their school!

Hi hi hi :)

This is a presentation and activity for learning CIVICS in English, intended for my JHS 3rd year students. From New Horizons 3 page 68-69.

This presentation is interactive! You are able to click on the hidden links throughout the presentation, adhering to the choices of the class.

This activity begins with students voting on their favourite burger restaurant of the three choices given (i.e.; Burger King, McDonalds, and Mos Burger).

From the class vote, the story begins with the company needing a new CEO! The students must listen to each candidates' choices in "improving" and the intended changes to the company if they are voted to CEO.
1st Candidate: Students are able to get free drinks on Wednesdays, but they can only get a free drink when they order through the restaurant's drive-thru.
2nd Candidate: For the whole month of April students are able to get a free burger and drink set, but they can only get the free set if they order in English!

Next, follows an introduction to Civics and it's importance. Touching on what it is, how to participate in it, as well as a quiz on the voting age in Japan.

In the presentation there is also a section on emphasizing the importance of voting, however, for time, you can elect to skip past it to save time for the main activity.

Next, you will introduce the class to the CHALLENGE and main activity of the lesson: "What do you want to change about your school?"

I offer them ideas. Then, I give my own change that often stirs some conversation (Changing the school lunch milk to strawberry milk!"). This is a great time to share other ideas that may seem far-fetched or completely different in Japanese culture (i.e., Classroom Halloween costume contest, longer summer vacation, or even changing the colours of their uniforms.)

Tell students they will be presenting their ideas in groups, with each student then voting on the campaign they like and rating it one (1) to five (5), giving reason as to why as well.

Google Doc: The first page is for their brainstorming and speech/note taking page. The second page is their voting sheet for each group.

I use Google Slides and Google Docs. The link to the presentation and document are down below.

Thank you :)

Wow, I really love your PowerPoint design! I loved the use of anime characters to make the beginning fun and engaging. I hope I can use this later on in the school year.
