Activity

Reduced Relative Clause? Sure, let's do it!!!!

This is a speaking activity for you to practice this grammar in a natural way. Give your students a good opportunity to speak real English, instead of repeating ridiculous phrases!

①. After I warm up the class, I do a little presentation about a place in the prefecture where I live. In this case, it's about an amusement park. So, I show some pictures of this place and talk about it. "This is an amusement park visited by many people in Tochigi. The name is Nasu Highland Park." Of course, all my students know about this place, and it's very easy for them to get the idea.

② Now, I ask the students to think about other places in our prefecture. I do a little brainstorming with them. I let them talk for a minute or so, and then I ask many of them to mention different places in our prefecture. The JET writes the places on the blackboard to have a list.

③ Now, we ask the students to choose either one place from the list or another one from our prefecture that hasn't been mentioned yet. After that, they use their iPads to find a picture of it. You might want to help those students who can't make a decision on what place to choose.

④ Now that the students are all set, go back to your presentation and say the same thing you did at the beginning. The JET check with the students the meaning of the grammar point. Here, I pick a clever student that can do the same thing I did, but with the place that the student chose. If the student did it well, I ask another one to translate what the first student said.

⑤ Make pairs, and let them practice with the same pattern. "This is a temple in ooo visited by 0000". You can also use "located in ooo".

⑥ Pick a new student, and project his picture on the TV. That way, while doing the presentation everyone can see it.

⑦ I do my presentation again, but now I add more information about the place. "This is an amusement park visited by many people. The name is Nasu Highland Park. There are many roller coasters in this park. You can eat good food like Nasu Udon, pizza, ramen, and burgers." So basically students need to add extra information about the place they chose.

⑧ Make new pairs, and let them practice. Pick up a new student and let him/her do the presentation.

⑨ Here I play with the time left. I may ask the students to add present perfect sentences ("I have visited OOO many times) which they already learned in the first term. I might ask them to use the past tense as well. For instance, I ask them to talk about the last time they visited that place.

⑩ Finally, and only if you have time left, I ask them to write down on the worksheet what they said in the presentation.

Remember, we are here to practice with them how to speak. Normally, they only write in English class, so this is a good chance for them to do something different and really useful.

Leave me a comment with the result of the lesson.

Have a great lesson!
