Activity

Batter Up

Students get to practice their English with the teacher.

I can't take credit for this activity. Someone mention this activity on the JET Reddit page and decided to make the slides for it. (Thank you random stranger.)

The rules are pretty simple.

Divide the class in half.
Have the students choose their "batting" line up. (Who goes first.)
Come to the front to batter up and choose which question they would like to answer. (Change the questions however way you want.)
Single = Easy Question = 1 point
Double = Medium Question = 2 points
Triple = Hard Question = 3 points
Home Run = 1 minute conversation (If you can’t speak for 15 seconds, you’re out) = 4 points (Eventually, you'll get students who are risk takers and want to see if they can get a home run. Then find out that it's not as hard as they thought it was. lol)
If they can’t answer the question, they get a strike.
Just like baseball, if they get 3 strikes, move on to the next team.
The group with the most points win. (I usually bribe my students with stickers and that gets them excited.)

I suggest giving the students some think time for the Single, Double, and Triple questions.

You can play it like an actually baseball game and have only 9 innings (9 rounds). But that's entirely up to you. I just played until I'm out of questions.

I used this game with my SHS students but depending of the level of students, you could use this for JHS students.

This was originally on Google Slides but I couldn't find a way to give access to people who aren't from my prefecture. So I hope the PPT works well, since I'm working with an old version. Feel free to make changes!

      This sounds like fun.

      Could you explain how the powerpoint works?

      I get that you click the question choice, but what is the helmet, bat, ball, and glove for?

      They seem to just go around in a circle for me.

      So basically, after each student answers the question, you decide if they made a hit or if they missed based off of their answers.

      The helmet means they made a hit and the bat means they missed and it shows the images to the students. The ball just takes you back the slide where the next student can choose which type of question they would like to answer.

      The glove is just to take you to the end of the last slide to finish the game.

      I hope that makes sense.

      Thanks for that!
