Activity

Classroom Comparatives and Superlatives! (er, est)

Worksheet with 2 different activities that practice ...er and ...est using descriptors such as young, old, tall, short, cute, cool, etc.

My students are having a hard time with "...er" and "...est" so I was asked to make an activity for them. This worksheet is like 2 activities in 1.

STEP ONE
First, students look at the picture and compare the characters with each other. There are multiple different answers for these, so I provided a word box for them as well. They have to think about the use of "er" and "est" still, though.
After that, I have them make a "Who am I?" style quiz, where they provide hints using ...er and ...est based on the picture. For example; "I'm taller than Kou. I'm older than Jun. I'm the oldest of all. Who am I?" (Reiko)

STEP TWO
Next, students have to get up and take surveys on their fellow classmates. They probably know who the tallest in the class is, but if you have two tall boys who are almost the same height, it's fun to make them compare. I set my students free and then we reconvene as a group. After that, they're free to find out the "youngest" and the "strongest" in the class to the best of their ability.

If you have students who finish early, I gave them a BONUS section where they can write their (NICE) opinion about any of their friends. For example, Hanako-chan is the cutest in the class, or something.

Provided is a .doxc and PDF version of the worksheet.
Lemme know if you have any questions. Thanks!
