DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  • Place the 10 pictures around the room.
  • Put the students in groups and hand out the worksheet (different worksheets for 1st and 2nd Grade).
  • One student from each group (this job is rotated) leaves the group, looks at a picture, memorizes the number and situation, and reports back to their group. All students write ten sentences in English and Japanese (or only English if using 1st grade version).
  • Control how long the activity takes by how well you hide the pictures.

VARIATIONS:

  • Cover the back of the page so they can't see through and tape it to the wall facing the wall upside down (tape on top) so when they flip it up it is right.
  • Be as sneaky as possible, I hide them in the most hard to find places in the classroom. If you want a short activity, lay them around the room face up.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • If you have a certain type of JTE, you might need to emphasize that the students are meant to find the pictures, like a treasure hunt, on their own, and the contents of the pictures are meant to be a surprise. Some JTEs like to point out the locations and explain the contents to "avoid confusion."
