2023 NOTE: I just posted the 2023 versions. The third year one is okay, ran it with a few classes. The second year one and the first year I haven't run yet but its all the same questions as last year and they went over well then. For showtime I put in W-ind, bang bang finger pistol dance moves because that's what they did in gym dance class this year and a move from Celebrate by Twice because that is still currently in the Japan Top 100 song list on itunes. Showtime is explained below.
I've been using a Mario Version of this for many years but I'm trying to get away from leaning too hard into video game stuff all the time. I figure its the last class of the year the theme should be school. I had planned on doing this last year but I was lazy. This year since I had to change the questions for the new books I thought it would be a good time for an update.
The way to play is the same as the old game. The students are put into groups. You go to the main screen with the 24 boxes after going through the slides that explain the points and the types of questions. This was built to be used on a tablet and tablets have issues with running animations and hyperlinks. Thus when you pick a box and click it another box appears over top of it. You need to click this to go to the question slide.
On the question slide at the top it will show what type of challenge. Answer the question, complete or fix a sentence, combine sentences, translate and showtime are the usual catagories. Once everyone knows what to expect you click on that banner and the question or challenge will appear along with some picture.
Each group should send a member to a teacher to answer the challenge. After the teacher says okay they either pick a card from the teacher to get points or go to the tablet and get points by clicking on a letter at the bottom. I generally use cards, both teachers will have a set. After everybody has come (or a time limit is reached) click on the question to see an answer and then on the answer to return to the number board to pick the next question.
With the next question each member should send a different member.
I usually tell the groups they can use their textbooks to look up answer.
NOTE
Showtime is a special case. In this case rather than answer a question the student comes up and does a gesture. This is generally good fun but if a student is really shy then they can come up with a friend.
Save the last few minutes of the lesson for a goodbye message.
Also many of the pictures and the background are just placeholders. I’ll run the activity on school computers or tablets and I’ll replace the pictures with pictures specific to the school. Whenever I can't get the teacher to help put in pictures of the class and various school events I cut all the introduction and just go direct to the game saying we're doing a review quiz and introduce the card types and question types. The place holder pictures really don't mean much. So far I've only managed to get two teachers to find pictures to add to the activity. Generally they are too busy and I don't have access to them on my computer. All in all goes just fine without, the theme is still good but it is nice if you can get the pics revelant to the schools.
I’m looking for suggestions for popular and simple dances, catchphrases and so on to use with this activity. Last year I used the nawatobi dance and I’ve still got it on here. Anyone got any ideas?
There's a pretty fun video of a comedian, チョコレートプラネット, dancing to Justin Bieber's "Stay". I bet you could clip the main arm sway part of the dance. I don't really know how popular it is, but it came out a few months ago. I would link a youtube clip but I can't at school.
Thanks HTemple. I'll check it out after work and send my son a link. If knows he its probably famous enough.
What about a portion of a dance from a BTS video?, or the finger heart gesture?
Hi Topaz79, that's a great suggestion. I'm going to start a gif search this afternoon to update SHOWTIME. The finger heart gesture is perfect. Its by Baby G Dragon right? For dances this year I'm going to ask the gym teacher about whatever dance they practiced in gym class and try to find or make gifs based on it.
Apparently they did Bang Bang by w-inds. Its got some easy finger pistol moves.
I don't know exactly where the finger heart gesture comes from myself, but I have seen it all over the place
Id forgotten about it myself but my nieces were doing it at a family gathering a couple of months back. Glad you reminded me.
It doesnt seem to be working correctly on my end.
@ccgart. I'm sorry to hear that. I just tried the three files and they worked okay on my computer. It runs PowerPoint 2016. What's not working?
