Activity

My JHS highlights

Students reflect back on their years in junior high school and share their memories with their classmates.

I made this activity for that time at the end of the year when third-year JHS students aren't covering new grammar and are just studying for high school tests. I introduce the word "highlights" which might be familiar to them in katakana form in the context of sports highlights.

To boil it down to its simplest form, students write their memories of elementary and each school year in junior high school in the boxes provided. I explain it by writing my own highlights from my time in school:

Elementary school: Playing soccer with my friends at school.
Junior high school: Moving to a new house.
High school: Playing games with my friends.

I ask the JTE for their memories as well. I write them in gerund form but you can use another kind of sentence if you like. I ask the students to write out their memories and then share them with their friends. If their friend has the same memory, they can say "Me too!" and sign their name in the box. If you want, you can have the students write out some of the memories their friends said. "Yumi's highlight was visiting Kyoto on the school trip."
