JHS Grammar Introductions

Short PowerPoints for introducing/reviewing grammar points.

Grammar Introductions for New Horizons (2021).

Every now and then I get a share request from an interac email address that throws up an error message when I accept. Please try with another (non-interac) google account

Update: I am sharing these via Google Drive to save altopedia.net bandwidth. LINK BELOW

I have a bad memory and am bad at thinking of suitable example sentences to practice when introducing grammar points. So I use my old friend PowerPoint! I will periodically update the google folder so they should be fairly uptodate.

I will post here the short simple grammar introduction PowerPoints I use. These are varying degrees of length and completeness. They are ALL in a constant state of being edited and improved upon each year and after each use. These are generally super quick grammar intros or reminders I might use at the beginning of a class.

There may be variations to practice vocabulary or a related grammar reminder first. There is no set rule of order but generally follow this pattern;

-Show the Key Sentence from the (New Horizons) textbook and I try to elicit the meaning by breaking down the sentence.
-Show some other generally simpler examples and check meaning.
-A slide to show how the grammar is formed.
-Practice sentences where I try to get the students to make sentences (the whole class together out loud)
-A cheatsheet style slide that can be left up for reference when they are doing other activities that don`t require the TV/projector.
-Some also have an activity to practice (generally Pair Practice or Eraser Pass) or some questions you can use for an activity.

Pair Practice - In pairs, one student closes their eyes and the other student tells them some sentences in Japanese. The student with their eyes closed try to say the sentences in English.
Eraser Pass - Bomb game or what you may call it. Students make a sentence/ask a question, then pass the eraser to their partner. Keep going until the timer runs out (hide the timer from their view). When the timer is up, that student with the eraser is the loser and the other student gets one point. 5 questions in each so each pair will have a winner.

These are very varied and I am working to improve them as I use them. I will try to keep this up-to-date and upload when I improve or change one. You may want to change the order, add information or edit the sentences (many of the sentences are about me or my town!).

The file name format I use is School Grade-Unit-Unit Part-Page Number (so 01-05-01-48 would be first grade, unit 5, part 1, page 48) for ease of filing.

I hope these are useful for you guys. Have a great day!

I have had a couple of requests for access that I couldn't grant because interac emails were used. Sorry. Please try again with another email address! Thanks.

These are fantastic, do you have a drive available with everything together? Games/Grammer/Ideas, I have been using these for the students who have fallen behind the fast paced JHS curriculum. It has been an amazing asset for them, I gave them all the powerpoints to help them self study as well after the lessons. Tablet life is going well for english class.

That is wonderful to hear. I am so happy that they are being used in that way. It wouldn't have crossed my mind to do that! Unfortunately all my activities are on USB and there's way to much to bung onto my Google drive. Though, I can put some things like running dictations up. Perhaps I can work on that in the spring holiday. In the meantime, I just updated these so they are now the newest versions with a couple of news ones.
