Because ~ing rules are hard!!
(This uses New Horizons 6th grade vocabulary)
I made this little booklet printout to help my 6th graders with spelling verbs for ~ing forms.
The "book" has an outside and inside. You could print out both sheets and have the students grab one of each and fold it themselves or you could fold it yourself for your students if you have a lot of deskwarming time like me :)
I wrote a lot of rules and instructions in Japanese.
The main rules I wrote were:
▲=「e」disappears and is replaced with 「~ing」
★= The letter before「~ing」doubles itself. Like 「Swi mm ing」
I only marked "dance / dancing" and "swim / swimming" on the printout as a hint, and then wrote both of them on the blackboard during class (when explaining that there are "special ~ing" words) to help them visualize the change.
Next, I had them find the "special ~ing" words and mark them with either ▲ or ★ themselves.
There are 10 ▲ and 4 ★ verbs.
I had them practice writing what they enjoyed and then how they felt about it "It was ______." and then had them go around the room for the last few minutes to practice asking "How was your summer vacation?" and answering "I enjoyed ○○○○. It was ○○○○." to other students.
The front page is to practice writing their names and then big box is for if they wanted to decorate their booklet during their free time.
I also added a "It was ○○○○." bingo on the back of the booklet in case I had free time and wanted to practice more with the students.
Feel free to use this with your students as well if they are struggling with spelling!
This is great! Really well made. I'll try and use it with my sixth graders.
This is beautiful! Thank you for learning more Japanese than me. ;_;
OMG! This is so cute. I love how it's pamphlet and some kids will probably try to save it forever XD I wish I still taught in ES. Just want to say I think this is super well done!
I wish you included the word format as well 😔
@monadotme - Sorry, this was actually made on photoshop, so there originally wasn't a word format to begin with 😭
The hand-out looks great!
Just a suggestion, though. Some 6th graders may have difficulty with kanji, so adding furigana or ruby characters may help the students understand explanations and instructions better. :)
