Activity

Future and Prediction

This activity will introduce to students about the terms future and prediction. They will be required to write about what they think the future will look like in 50 years.

I did this activity with my High School 1st graders and I was impressed by what they thought the future would look like.

  1. Explain the terms future, prediction and come true, then allow them to tell you in Japanese. I kept the explanations really simple. I attached a document showing how i explained the terms and it worked for me.

  2. Students worked in pairs and came up with their own predictions. Allow them to use the target language I predict that...
A few examples they gave me were: I predict that my mother will cook dinner tonight, I predict that it will rain tomorrow.

Worksheet

  1. You can play a short scene from the anime Astro Boy ( this anime was a prediction of what the future would look like)
  2. Students will write 1 or 2 sentences about what they see in the video eg. I see flying cars and tall buildings.
  3. Based on what they see in the video, they can determine whether these predictions in the anime have come true
For example: Tall buildings have come true but flying cars havent come true.

  4. Students will write about what they think the world will look like in 50 years. They will use the Useful Expressions at the bottom of the page. They can also use the picture hints at the back of the worksheet to assist them with their writing.

NB: I also prepared and read a sample to the students as was requested by my JTE. I will also attach that document.

Thanks for this. Do you have a link to the Astro Boy clip or reference to which episode and clip you used?
