This activity does require a bit of prep time for the ALT, but we've enjoyed it in my classes:) I've attached the PowerPoint used for JHS 2nd grade to practice unit 6 key sentences, but you can adapt this activity for other grammar points as well!
CLASS ONE
Start by making a PowerPoint with 10 questions you want the students to answer about themselves, using the target grammar. I've attached the one I used (it includes questions like "What sport do you like the best of all?" and "What kind of sushi is the most delicious of all?"). Hand out a worksheet to each student and go through the questions one by one. The students write their answers. This took about 10-15 minutes. Collect the worksheets so you have your ~data~.
BETWEEN CLASSES ONE AND TWO
Get to work tallying up the answers! I used an excel sheet to do this. It seems like a lot of work, but once you input a few answers, it gets easier since a lot of students have the same answers. However, keep in mind that I only have two classes per grade with around 40-50 students total, so it will take longer if you have more students. I also combined the answers for the entire grade instead of keeping each class separate.
After you get your answers, it's time to put them in the PowerPoint. For some questions, I put the top two or three answers, with point values being the number of students that wrote that answer down (e.g., 20 students writing soccer as the sport they like best = 20 points). For questions where students had to choose from two or three options, I made it so that the students only get to choose one answer that they think was most popular, and award 5 points if they get it right (it sounds a bit confusing, but it should be straightforward if you take a look at the PPT). Also, hide the slides with the results on it when you show the PPT in the first class!
CLASS TWO
Put your students into groups, and give each a whiteboard, marker, and eraser. It's time to go through the questions again, and this time, the students will write the answer(s) they think is/are the most popular in the grade. For example, for the first question in my PPT (Which sport do you like the best of all?), I get students to write their top three answers (e.g., soccer, baseball, tennis) and rank them first, second, and third. I only make them write the answer just to save time. Give them around 30 seconds to write their answers. Then, each group goes around and says their top answer in a full sentence: "We (as in the second grade collectively) like soccer the best of all sports." Once you go through every group, reveal the answers. They must get the rank right too in order to get the points for each answer. You can either keep track of the points on the board, or ask the students to keep track of their own points on their whiteboards (what I usually do). The group that gets the most points at the end wins!
This activity is a fun way to get to know your students a bit more. Feel free to change the questions, point values, or anything else to suit your classes better:)
P.S. If you use my PPT, question 9 is about how toasted the students like their bread. The Q/A I wrote is kinda clunky, but since it was only one question (and I really wanted to use it lol), I just went with it. Feel free to change it!
