DETAILED EXPLANATION:
- After teaching the students the target vocabulary, teach the grammar, "What are you," and its response, "I am ." "Where are you from," and its reply, "I am from ."
- Give 3-5 cards to each student. Each card has two columns and inside each column has various animals and countries. For each card, the student must choose one animal and country, but no two cards should be identical.
- Start some upbeat music and have the students start walking around the classroom. When the music stops, students stop and whoever is in front of them or close to them will be their conversation partner for that round.
- Each student in turn asks the target questions, "What are you," and "Where are you from?” The other student must answer, "I am dog," "I am from England."
- After each student has asked and answered the questions, they play Janken and the winner chooses one of the loser's cards.
- The student with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner.
VARIATIONS:
- While the students are walking around, have them make the animal's sound that they will be jankening with when the music stops.
TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:
- The grammar taught in this lesson leaves out definite/indefinite articles (a, an, the). While these articles are important, teaching young students how and when to use them will confuse them more than anything.
- This activity uses two grammar points. If the students seem to be struggling with using multiple grammar points, it might be easier to teach one grammar point per class.
