Activity

Have You Ever Bet

Students practice "Have you ever ....?" questions while having fun betting about classmates' experiences.

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  • Pass out the sheet to the students and give them a moment to look over it.
  • Demonstrate the activity with your JTE.
  • Do a read/repeat/vocabulary check for any of those questions that you think might be confusing for your students.
  • Let everyone walk around and ask the questions--students should try to ask as many students as possible--one question per student.
  • The purpose of the activity is for students to enjoy (hopefully!) getting practice in using the "Have you ever .....?" question form by guessing about their friends and seeing how many points they can get for correct guesses.

VARIATIONS:

  • The activity could also be done as just a pairwork activity, if you prefer that your students not walk around.
  • You will probably want to change the place names to localize it to your region.

Tried this for 3rd grade JHS and it worked decently well. I would recommend reducing the number of questions. I reduced mine to 16 and it still took over 30 mins. Remind students that each question should be posed to only one other student, otherwise they will just ask one or two friends all the questions. As with mingling activities of this sort, it's best to keep it to a short time and monitor heavily, as some students just use it as an excuse to chat with their friends.
