Cut out and place the second half of 8 sentences around the room. For example: "...because they are exciting."
Students break into teams of 4 (or 3).
Each student gets a worksheet with a list of the first half of 8 sentences. For example: "I like to watch action movies..."
PART A
Step 1: One at a time, the students go around the room, find one of the phrases, memorize it, return to their group, and tell it to the group from memory. (No taking the paper back with them and no shouting across the room). All students write the phrase on their paper. Then the next student finds the next phrase.
Step 2: Once the students have collected all 8 phrases, they draw lines to match the two halves of the sentences together.
Step 3: After they're done, one student in the group brings their paper to the ALT to check their answers.
PART B
A writing section for the students to create their own original sentences, using Part A as inspiration as needed.
(We used this as homework so they had more time for Karuta)
Bonus Karuta!
Students who finish the matching activity can play a game of Karuta.
Students place the "when" "if" "that" and "because" cards on the desk in the middle of the group.
One student takes a sentence card and reads it. "I played the piano every day ___ I was 10 years old."
The other students listen to the sentence and slap the conjunction they think finishes the sentence. The fastest student keeps the question card.
