SPEED is a classic card game that is competitive and high paced fun!
Materials: Around the Town Cards

Break your class up into smaller groups and give each group a single deck.
Shuffle the cards
1. You will make two piles with 5 cards each, faced down about 1 ft (1/3 meters) apart, in the middle of the circle of players.
2. Then place two cards (side-by-side and face-down) in between the first two piles.
3. Deal out the remaining cards. Players DO NOT look at their cards.
4. Players take 5 cards from their pile and line them up in front of them (face up so that they can see the cards). They place their remaining cards nearby them.
5. When all players are ready, two players will SIMULTANEOUSLY flip over the two center cards.
6. Students race to place cards (one-by-one) with either the preceding number or the next number to one of the face up cards in the middle of the deck--forming two new piles. MAKE SURE THAT THE PLAYER FIRST SAYS THE VOCABULARY/GRAMMAR POINT using the vocabulary on the card BEFORE placing it down. Each time they place a card, they should replace it from their pile of remaining cards that they should have nearby.
7. When no one has a card that can be placed on either of the two piles, two students will SIMULTANEOUSLY flip over the top card on the two center face-down piles, placing them on each of the two face-up piles.
8. The first player to run out of cards wins the game.
** Students will typically tend to continue the game even after there is a clear winner. You can let them play down to the last player, or tell them to reset the game so that everyone can continue to practice speaking.
