Materials Needed:
- WantToGoToSaizeria attachment
- MarioKart characters: I played this game using Englipedia's Almost Mario Kart rules and every time a team answered a question, their team's character went one space forward on the course. This is optional but is advised for classes with low motivation.
Detailed Explanation:
- Hand out the worksheet and have the student match the correct reasons. NOTE: "Lala Park" is a local shopping centre in our town. Please change it to something for your students.
- After about five minutes, check answers as a class.
- Then, make teams and have each team decide the order of the team's members.
- The first team members stand up. You give the start of a sentence (you can use the list from Englipedia's Want to Pachinko if you like) and students have to come up with a reason for wanting to do that.
- The team with the most points/fastest Mario Kart character is the winner.
Variations:
- If the sentences in this activity were changed to "I want to ～ TO ～" instead of "BECAUSE", then it could be used for the Infinitive Verb (suru tame ni).
- To make it more difficult, halfway through the activity you might like to give the reason and have the kids think of the "want".
Teaching Suggestions:
- If the students don't know 'want/because' then give a brief explanation with a few examples.
- Tell the students that sentences such as "I want to play baseball because I like baseball." or "I want to go to Mos Burger because I like Mos Burger." are not allowed. By doing this you get them to use their brains a little more. :-)
