Pokémon Theme Listening Practice

Fill-the-gap listening practice for the original English Pokémon theme.

When 4Kids dubbed the first season of Pokémon, they changed the opening theme completely. Students are unlikely to know this banger of a song, so it makes for great listening practice and cultural exchange! You can change which words they need to fill in if you think they're too easy/difficult. Answers to my version are below the instructions. You could even teach them to sing it if they're interested enough, but I think my 1st Grade High Schoolers were a bit past that.

You want "Pokémon Indigo League Opening", available on YouTube. (I've tried 10 times to get the link working but I'm not having any luck.)

Instructions

  1. Hand out the sheets
  2. Explain that when the English version of Pokémon was made, they changed the song's tune and words.
  3. Play it once, having students just listen and not write.
  4. Tell students they can write this time, and play it again but at x0.75 speed.
  5. Give them a moment to finish up, then play it a third time, again at x0.75.
  6. Check the answers with them. You can write them on the board to help them. Optional: play it again at normal speed.
