JHS 3rd Grade Year Review

Students work in groups to answer review questions.

This is a fun Powerpoint game based on Super Mario Galaxy where teams will get random points. The Powerpoint template is from www.waygook.org with some edits from me and I borrowed a few questions from AsakawaSune's review Jeopardy game. This game involves grammar points from throughout the New Horizon 3 textbook and has various types of questions such as translation, finish the sentence, fix the sentence, and more. You can play this however you'd like but I'll explain how I played it.

What you'll need: a TV/projector to show the game and whiteboards, markers, and erasers for each group

Gameplay (one way to play the game)
1. Break students into groups (3-5 students is best) and have them come up with a team name. Write the team names on the board.
2. Tell students that they must keep track of their own points on their whiteboards. Since there is a possibility of a group getting negative points, I had all groups start with 10 points.
3. Decide which group will go first. This group will choose the letter. I thought of a number from 1-10 and the closest group to guess went first. Then I went in order based on location in the classroom.
4. All groups will write their answer on their whiteboard. Groups that are correct get 1 point. I allowed groups to try again. Since the questions take varying times to complete, I did not have a strict time limit and ended the question when I thought sufficient time was up. I allowed some non-traditional answers as long as it was grammatically correct. I also allowed some spelling mistakes because they didn't use their textbooks, as long as it wasn't too egregious or easy of a word.
5. The group that chose the letter will get the random points that show up after the answer appears on screen as long as they answered correctly. If they did not answer correctly, the fastest team to answer that was correct got the points instead.
6. Make sure to click the little yellow guy in the corner when prompted to get back to home. Then continue playing. To keep track, I put a star (any symbol will work) beside the team name of the current "it" team. And I wrote "1" beside the fastest team and check marks by all teams that had correctly answered.

You of course don't have to play this way, I just found this way to give all groups an equal chance to get (or lose) points. Be as strict or flexible as you want to be with answers.

Note: For the "fight me" challenge, I had students play rock, paper, scissors against me.
"Change points" means that the "it" team will swap points with another team. I didn't allow the groups to know each other's points so the "it" team could end up with more or less points than before.

My students LOVED this game. They've already asked if we can play it again before they graduate. Thanks so much for sharing!

If the "it" group gets a question wrong, and the points page deducts points instead of awarding points, do they still get points deducted? And every group that gets it right also get points deducted?

Outstanding! Might even get away with this with high schoolers.
