I Wish I Had Advice

An interactive PowerPoint presentation and activity for teaching the sentence structures "I can't/I wish I could ~," "I don't have/I wish I had ~," and "If I were you, I would ~."

Hi hi hi :)

This is a presentation and activity for introducing the sentence structures:
(1) "I can't (do something)" and the accompanying wish "I wish I could (do something)".
(2) "I don't have (something)" and the accompanying wish "I wish I had (something)".
(3) Following with advice for the wishes wished for, "If I were you, I would (do this)".

I used this for my JHS 3rd years.

This presentation is interactive!

The story follows a wizard who grants people their wishes! However, one day his powers are taken away and he must help people by giving them advice instead! You will help the people in need by completing their wishes, and then help the wizard by giving advice to the people in need.

Note: Be sure you keep track and a tally of how many points they're accumulating. I usually write the number of points on the board so they can see as we continue on with the story.

Note: For the story, try and ensure the students know the vocabulary [wizard], [wishes], [granted], etc.. Do this by taking pauses when needed to ask them, "What's WIZARD in Japanese?"

Note: You can be as funny and playful as you want. I tend to lean towards changing my voice as I talk as the different characters or by moving around and acting it out if I can! If you are a little shy, you can work with your JTE for the interactions in the story.

Advice for this presentation: Please do a run through of the presentation to get used to the timing of certain slides. Some slides you need to click once for the transitions and effects and other times it's manual and you can have your own timing with it!

I wish I had advice!

(1) Students write two things they DON'T HAVE and make a wish!
E.g.: I don't have a smartphone. I wish I had a smartphone.

(2) Students write two things they CAN'T DO and make a wish!
E.g.: I can't run fast. I wish I could run fast.

(3) This is where students can work with a partner.
(a) Students will say their wishes from #1 and #2.
Their partner will then help by giving advice, using the sentence structure, "If I were you, I would ~".
(b) Students will then write down their partner's wishes and the advice they would give to them.

(4) Students then reflect on the conversation and write down advice they received from a wish they made on what they don't have but wish they had, and a wish on what they can't do but wish they could.

I use Google Slides and Google Docs. The link to the presentation, storyline outline and document are down below.
