My elementary school has a tradition where the ALT makes name lanyards for all students before the school year starts. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this until it was too late, and the previous ALT didn’t leave me their template. So, I created my own using Canva!

✂️ Tips:
- Have the kids help cut the edges and tie the string for their lanyards. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck doing it all on your own, and it’s A LOT!
- I type out all the kids names, print on regular A3 paper, then laminate. You can have your HRT help you cut out the name tags to be rough squares and then have the students cut out the rounded edges. I also use that 2-hole punch that Japanese kids use for their binders here so they can tie a string on it and wear it.
- One of my schools asked if we could just stick little magnetic backings onto them and place it on the front of students desks. I actually liked that method more!
âś… Pros:
- Students always have a reference for how to spell their names.
- I look like I know every student’s and HRT’s name perfectly!
❌ Cons:
- Some kids rely on them too much. I think my 5th and 6th graders can spell their names, but they still double-check with the lanyard.

These are great! What size paper did you print them on?
I printed these on A3! A4 is a bit hard to read if kids are in the back of the room.
Another side note I just thought of:
Each of my classes uses a different color cardstock too. Reminds me what class they are at a glance. The JTE hung up a bunch of tacks in the English Room and the kids would hang them there instead of carrying them around. But honestly you could just have them put them in their English books too as a sort of bookmark when they arn't wearing them.
Do you laminate them or just print on hard paper? Do they last long cause in my experience kids play or put it somewhere and say "nakushita" I misplace it. Sorry for the many questions.
I love the template you made. It's really helpful.
oh I sent a request to edit the template. I would greatly appreciate it if you can make it editable.
@doughn0tdisturb Sorry I didn't see your message until now! The link was changed to a template link so you should be able to edit.
