Short Vowel Phonics Storybooks

7-8 page storybooks focusing on each of the vowels' short sounds. Provides Japanese translation above the English text

These storybooks focus on CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words featuring a, e, i, o, and u respectively. There are also some sight words that kids will likely already be familiar with (eg. the, he, etc.). The stories are very similar to what early reader books are like for native English speaking kids but adjusted to reflect the limited English vocabulary for Japanese students. Each sentence has an approximate Japanese translation above it, and the words are color coded to help show what each word's translation would be. I tried my best to make the stories amusing, but it's really difficult to do foundational phonics in a way that's fun and engaging for older kids. That said, I think there's a level of accomplishment kids feel reading these, which helps keep them from getting bored.

I haven't printed these out, so unfortunately, I can't make any recommendations about how to print/present the materials. However, using a tablet or reading as a class from the projector screen does work well.

I'd recommend setting kids up in pairs or groups of three to read together. Alternatively, reading as a class is also an option. I think the choice really just depends on how strong the class is at phonics and how they tend to operate. Ideally, you can offer a lot of support and commentary as they read, but the goal is for the students to be the readers, not the teacher.

These are great! My junior high school students are reviewing phonics, so this is really helpful :)
