24 NHE6 U1 Writing Practice

A worksheet to accompany the 2024 edition of New Horizon Elementary 6, unit 1. Students practice writing about themselves (with scaffolding!).

The worksheet is pretty self-explanatory. I have students complete this and use it to practice for the speaking test at the end of the unit (I have HRTs who insist on speaking tests for every unit!). Print and distribute. I usually walk students through it step-by-step and explain the answers as we go.

① Students trace the sentences (the whole thing from start to finish). Point out the meaning of "this" and remind them about apostrophes. Give them about 2 minutes to do this, then read the sentences with them and explain the meaning.
② Students use the pictures at the top to complete the sentences. They go in order so it's as easy as possible, but my kids still find a way to complicate it, so you may have to explain it more thoroughly to your overthinkers. :) Studentsshould trace the parts of the sentence that are already there. Give them around 2-3 minutes for this part, then explain the meaning of the sentences and what goes where.
③ Students write about themselves. To be honest I never really enforce the use of the boxes at the top and I have reworked the layout for future units, so do with it what you will. The instructions say that the students should write/draw various things they want to introduce about themselves in the boxes, but again, it's up to you. The important part is them writing their self-introductions on the lines. Remind them about the hints on page one if they get stuck. If you can, try to collect these and check them before speeches so you can correct any mistakes or answer any questions.

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions!
