Set up:
Print/cut up KARUTA cards (students play in pairs). There are 12 cards in a set, the file has 2 sets on a side of A3.
Laminate (optional).
The cards include:
'Don't' ~ (for example: 'Don't eat here.')
'Be' ~ (for example: 'Be quiet.')
Verb ~ (for example: 'Go straight.')
Objective:
Students to practice the imperatives with common signs, and play KARUTA!
Method:
Start with the PowerPoint. Go through each slide and get the students to guess what the sign means/check meaning. Do "repeat after me".
After all the 'don't' signs, there is a summary page. Ask: "What's this?" etc. to get the students to recall.
Then, check the next signs. Get the students to guess what the sign means/check meaning. Do "repeat after me".
After these signs, there is another summary page. Ask: "What's this?" etc. to get the students to recall. I had to double check the 'Be careful.' sign a couple of times, becuase they didn't previously know it.
Then, play KARUTA!
The students will know how to play.
Put them into pairs and push desks together.
Students must put their hands on their heads to stop any cheating!
I also applied a rule, that: students have to repeat what I said before they can slap the correct card.
Once they get the hang of it, it's fun to tease them by saying something similar to what's on the cards, but isn't .
- for example:
- 'Don't ride a _______ (horse/car/bus/etc.)'
- 'Wear a _______ (jacket/t-shirt/shoes)'
- 'Don't _______ (dance/play soccer/sing)
Play as many times as you like.
((For formatting, I use: 'Antique Olive Compact' or 'Segoe UI Black' for titles, and 'UD デジタル UK-R' for body text.))
This is fantastic!!! I played with my first year JHS students who are really slow if I might add and they had so much fun!
I played with my second year JHS and they loved this!
