Taking note of global events and finding ways to incorperate them into our English lessons, is a great way to make them more fun and memorable!
This is my second year doing World Music Day, and the students love it.
I start the lesson with Small Talk about what music the students like. I also show them some famous music artists from my country and see if they know any of them.
The PPT starts with some basic facts about the World Music Day and images of how it's celebrated [depending on time, I might show the videos here].
Then we play the Lyric Listening Game!
How to play:
Choose a song! I chose one that matches the grammar my 3rd graders are currently studying (NH3 U3 p.40). However, you can choose anything. It's nice if you can match some vocabulary or grammar to what the students are studying, but anything that matches your students level of English is good.
Select some words from the song - I usually choose the rhyming words at the end of a line, becuase it's easier for the students to hear.
Write them out on A5 paper and put them all over the board.
Split the class into 2 teams. Have them stand an equal distance from the board.
When the music plays they listen. When the music stops, they have to "run" and touch the word they think they heard.
Students can ask to hear it 'one more time' and, if they're struggling, can ask their team to help them.
Winner has the most points!
Then I have included a page about the artist, and I give the students a copy of the lyrics.
If your class likes singing, it can be fun to listen again and do karaoke.
I also get students to read the lyrics and highlight the key sentences.
At the end of the PPT, I have added various videos of World Music day. Depending on how much time I have, I choose to show them or not.
