JTE asked for a Unit 2 review game that practiced writing. This is a fun engaging game that practices writing!
Materials: Paper, powerpoint (TV), timer, stickers
SHOW POWERPOINT
- Students work in teams (rows). So 6 teams. I draw up a point chart on the black board
- Practice writing sentences using if, when, because, that (see ppt). You can change the target sentences as you wish
HAND OUT PAPER - I used blank B5 paper. I demonstrated they need to write their name clearly on the top of the paper in English (Romaji).
PRACTICE ROUND
- One sentence is shown on the powerpoint
- Students get 1 minute to finish the sentence, writing the full sentence on their paper
- For the demo, teacher collects Team 1's papers (5-6 papers)
- Teacher goes to the front and reads one sentence out loud (interesting or funny)
- The class must guess who in Team 1 wrote it. Students raise their hand. Teacher chooses the first person.
POINT SYSTEM - I give the class 3 guesses
- Correct guess +1
- Wrong guess -1
- If no one can correctly guess, the writing team gets +3
- If the guessing takes too long I just count '3, 2, 1', if no one guesses the writing team gets the points
LET'S START
- Each slide has a sentence and an in built 1 minute timer
- Collect Team 1's papers, read one answer out, class guesses, give points, reveal answer
- Repeat for Team 2-6
- 3-5 rounds depending on speed
Students really love it! Same students tend to guess, but all students need to write. Make sure to pick different students answers, this is also exciting for them even if they don't speak.
