The biggest project I've made so far for Japan ESL! In Korea we played this game once a semester as a fun way to relax before breaks or after JHS exams. Kids really looked forward to this each semester and they get VERY into it! It's a great full class time filler and I love playing game host lol~ The PowerPoint layout is similar to Jeopardy, so if you have used that in class before this will be a breeze.
Google Drive Link:
It is a chunky file because of all the audio and video clips.

If you are a visual person like me, I've included a preview of what it looks like below.
Objective:
Work as a team to earn as many points as possible by answering questions based on different categories.
Materials Needed:
-A computer with PowerPoint
-A TV or projector
-A blackboard or whiteboard for keeping score
-Small whiteboards and markers for each team
Game Setup:
1. Divide the students into teams of 3-6 students.
2. Make sure each team has a small whiteboard and marker for writing their answers.
3. Open the "Musical Pursuit" PowerPoint on your computer and display it on a TV or projector screen for all to see.
4. Keep score on a whiteboard for all to see.
How to Play:
Introduction: Explain to the students that they will be playing "Musical Pursuit," a game similar to a music quiz show, with different categories to choose from. The goal is to work as a team to answer questions on their whiteboards and earn points.
Categories:
- English Pop: Teams listen to a short clip of an English pop song and fill in five missing lyrics shown on the slide. Bonus points are awarded for knowing the song's name and the singer.
- Anime: Teams listen to 3 seconds of an opening song for an Anime. Teams write the Romaji title for points. Bonus points are awarded for knowing the song's name and the singer.
- Words: Teams listen to an audio clip and write the one missing lyric (multiple choice on the screen). Bonus points are awarded for knowing the song's name and the singer.
- Watch: Students watch a scene from a music video and then answer an easy question about something in the video (multiple choice).
- Karaoke: Students write the romaji or English song name and singer/band name.
Gameplay:
- The game begins with the first team selecting a category and number.
- Once a category is chosen, click to reveal the question slide.
- ALL teams write their answers on their whiteboards. If they need to listen to the audio again, click the grey music box. When time is up, teams hold up their answers for the teacher to see.
- Teams with the correct answer earn points. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so encourage students to guess if they’re unsure!
Next Round:
- Rotate to the next team to choose a new category + number. Continue until all questions have been answered or time runs out.
Winning:
- The team with the most points at the end of the game wins!

LOVEEEE THIS!!!!!!! Thank you so much!
Can you possibly upload this to the actual site? Not everyone can access google drive from school, but access to this site is fine (I subscribe to be able to DL larger files)
Saving this even though I'm JHS-ES based because this looks bomb!! I know SHS would eat this up because I've found many JHS students don't know current English songs unless they're memes or old. I can see this suiting SHS teens much more. Thanks for this cool set up!
@scrying So sorry that you can't access cloud services, my old BOE was like that too. I did some digging in the articles section here and have figured out why I cannot put it on ALTopedia. There is a 200MB limit for files uploaded here. With all the videos and audio clips embedded, the file is unfortunately too chunky to be shared. Sorry again!
I am becoming a leech to these fabulous content you guys been uploading. These kind of skills takes a lot of time to make!! Thank you Thank so much!!! wonderful selections. I have Two class observations This coming month and I will definite play part of this! Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing your hard work!! This is so so awesome, can't wait to try it!
I'm going to use this! Thanks so much for taking the time to create something so fun and exciting!
This is super awesome .Thanks a lot .
LOL the Chicken Attack video! I know my JHS will enjoy this. Thank you!
Could you please upload the music that is used in this activity too?TIA
I'd love to try and use this as a base for future uses with the same class, did you use anything specific to clip the videos and songs?
I just tried this today with my students and they loved it. Thank you very much for this wonderful material. It takes a lot of effort to make this and you shared it. We are grateful!
@aboutlea123 I actually deleted it off my laptop after uploading cause they took up too much room :( Sorry about that! If you want to, Download the PowerPoint from the drive, go to each slide that has the audio/video you want, right click, and select "Save Media as" and it should download to your computer.
@Thrasher Yeah I download audio/videos using 4K Video Dowloader free (which used to allow like 30 downloads per day but now only allows 10 -.- ), I cut the videos on ClipChamp free and the audio I just use an online trimmer like https://audiotrimmer.com/
@all Thanks for the feedback! So glad all of your classes are enjoying it~ Love getting kids excited with music they know/might like
Thank you for this! I and my students both loved this activity. By the way, where did you source the audio for the 'karaoke' songs?
You are absolutely amazing. I tried this with my students and it was a big hit!! Word spread about it before I even got to the other classes and they were so pumped. I would definitely like to try my hands on something like this.
@Georgebuk I looked them up on YouTube and specified "Karaoke (song name) with GUIDE"
@Belle aw Love it! Please post whatever you do~~~ I'd love to see more of these types of games on this website! While we are here to teach book-English, I think making fun, not-textbook-related games gets kids reinvested in our classes during the school year.
I know how tedious this is to make. Wow. so thank you very much for your generosity.
Good Job in this amazing creation. Cheers
Holy... This is great. Keeping this on hand to hopefully use sometime...
I love the song choice, too. Represents 2023-24 pop trends well.
I think you hold the record for largest filesize ever on ALTopedia. 1GB is impressive.
OH my goodness, I just noticed the timed lyrics... you're incredible what the hell
