... who ... (Tate-yoko Game - Disney Theme)

A short grammar practice for the relative pronoun 'who.' This can be used as a warm-up game. I guarantee that the students will have a blast!

The first three slides after the title slide provide a short review on how to use 'who.' Students might feel confused at first, but as they progress through the game, they will gain a better understanding of the target grammar.

Tate-yoko Game (Quess who…) Disney Characters

Ask the students to stand up. There are 14 Disney characters that the students need to guess. Each slide has 2 sentences (e.g., “He is someone who has a dog. He is someone who lives in a house full of balloons. Who is he?”). Ask the students to raise their hands if they know the answer. Play rock-paper-scissors if a student's answer is correct. If the NS or JTE wins, only one student will sit down. If the student wins, ask them to choose between “tate-yoko”, and then all the students will sit down. For a twist, ask the students who are sitting down to stand up and play the game again. Once all the slides are done, as a fun punishment, let the students dance the chicken dance from YouTube (or you may choose different dance music).

I used this as a review and warm-up game for my 3年生 JHS students, and they all became very competitive and even laughed while trying to guess the characters' names. Snow White has a Japanese name, so it was fun to watch the students' puzzled faces as they tried to think of Snow White's English name.

Hey thanks for sharing this looks like fun. Could you possibly list the names of the characters? I only know half of them at most. Sorry I'm not a Disney fan - the kids will probably know them but I'd like to know too.

My students got very excited with this. I really enjoyed their side comments too. My JTE and I were surprised that many of our students know the Disney characters. Thank you for sharing this wonderful warm-up game.

I'm glad your students enjoyed the game! It was really fun to see their reactions when they were trying to remember the characters' names. For Coco and Up, I asked them what the Japanese titles of those movies were: 'Remember Me' and 'カールじいさんの空飛ぶ家' (Grampa Carl's Flying House). When I told them the English titles, they were all like, 'The English title is easier!!'

It looks fun! I would heavily recommend putting the gifs/reveal type things on separate slides in future, as it makes it far easier to edit the powerpoint for the next person
