MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Large flashcards of places in the neighborhood
- Smaller size cards with magnets
- Blackboard and chalk
- Stopwatch
- Blindfolds
DETAILED EXPLANATION:
- Teach the various vocabulary of places found in the neighborhood. Some examples include: post office, fire station, bakery, supermarket, park, local game center, etc. Also, having a picture of your house in Japan will really get the kids going!
- Teach them the grammar point "Where is the ~ ?". Ask this question in relation to the kids own neighborhood. Some kids are very eager to show of their knowledge of where all the different places are located in their own town/village.
- Draw a huge map on the blackboard, as seen in the picture to the right, and place the smaller size picture cards of the same places on the map.
- Teach the directions they will need to navigate the map: right, left, up, down, back and stop. When teaching these directions, it's helpful to use lots of gestures by waving your hands around like a police officer directing traffic....the kids pick up on the language really quickly this way.
- Ask the kids the question, "Where is the (use any example)?" Have the students shout out the directions to you in English as you trace a line with the chalk on the board to the place you asked about. To avoid confusion, use a different color chalk than the one you drew the map with. Give each place a different point value, making sure to give the places furthest on the map the most points
- Once you have done this a few times to check their understanding its time to play. Split the class into groups. Have one person from each group come to blackboard to be the 'blindfolded driver'. The rest of the group are the 'navigators'. The navigators choose a card from the big stack randomly and must direct their drivers to their destinations. They have only one minute to reach their destinations. Explain each time they crash (hit the kerb) they minus one point from their potential score.
VARIATIONS:
- Teach the students to give the English commands when they are navigating their blind-drivers. TURN right/left, GO up/down/back.
- For big classes, you may make smaller maps so the students can play in groups at their desks.
TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:
- Drawing the map before class helps save on time and enables you to play more rounds of the game and satisfy chants of "mo ikai!!"
TIPS/CAUTIONS:
- Students will have a tendency to get excited and shout the directions in Japanese when their drivers are about to crash! Just keep reminding them they can only use English.
概要： 目隠している生徒がチームの仲間に導かれて、目標に到達します。このゲームは「右」(right)、「左」(left)、「上」(up)、「下」(down)、「後ろに」(back)「前に」(right)を使います。
必要な教材：
- 近隣の場所の大きいフラッシュカード
- マグネットのついた小さいフラッシュカード
- 黒板とチョーク
- ストップウオッチ
- グループの人数に適当な数の目隠し布
手順：
- 近隣のいろいろな場所の名前を教える
- 例えば、「パン屋」、「スーパー」、「公園」、「ゲームセンター」など。自分の家の写真もあれば生徒がゲームを楽しめる
- 文法のポイント「Where is the_____?」を教える。生徒自身の近隣の場所についてこの質問を使うと、身の回りのことを話したがる生徒もいるのでこのチャンスを大変喜ぶ。
- 黒板に巨大な地図を描く。場所を表す小さいカードをその地図に付けて置く。
- 地図の中を進むために「右に」、「左に」、「上に」、「下に」、「後ろに」、「前に」、「止まる」などの方向を表す言葉を教える。また、交通巡査のように手を振ったり、通行の指示をするようにジェスチャーを使って言葉を同時に教えると覚えやすい。
- 生徒に「Where is the _____?」と質問する。生徒は英語で方向を指示して大きい声で誘導するので、その道を質問した場所までチョークで黒板上を辿る。混乱を避けるために、一人ずつ違う色で描いたほうがいい。それぞれの場所にポイントを違う価値の得点をつけ、殊に地図上の一番遠い地点を高い得点をつけるようにする。
- ２、３回練習して生徒の理解度を確認したら、ゲームを始める。クラスをいくつかのグループに分ける。グループ毎に一人目隠しして運転者になる。残りの生徒はナビゲーターになる。ナビゲーター達は無作為に行き先のカードの山から一枚ずつ選ぶ。一分間だけ使ってナビゲーターは運転者を道案内する。何かにぶつかったら、全部のスコアから１ポイント取られることを教える。
バリエーション：
- 生徒に英語の動詞的な命令も教えます。目隠しをされて運転している生徒を案内する時「TURN right/left」(右・左に曲がって)、「GO up/down/back」(上に・下に・後ろに行って)のように使います。
- 大きいクラスのためには、少し小さめの地図を作れば、それぞれのグループの机でゲームが出来ます。
教える際のアドバイス：
- 授業前に黒板に地図を描けば、時間の節約になります。もっとラウンドできて、生徒の「mo ikkai」の不満を満足させます。
注意すること：
- 生徒は運転者が衝突しそうになると興奮しすぎて日本語で叫んでしまいます。ですから、日本語は使わないこと、英語しか使えないということを生徒に度々注意を喚起します。
