"How many?" Fishing Activity

In this activity students will use a fishing rod to catch laminated fish within a given amount of time. After the time is up let's count the fish together.

I learned about this activity through one of my elementary school JTEs.

PREP
Many laminated and cut out fish; enough for each team to have about 10 fish
paperclips
thread
magnets
wooden chopsticks

create the fishing rods by tying a string or thread to a set of wooden chopsticks. Then connect a magnet to the end of the thread by taping, tying, or gluing it to the string. The number of rods will depend on your class size. This game is played in vertical 列 teams. Finally attach a paperclip to each of the laminated fish so the magnet has something to attach onto for the game.

ACTIVITY
Divide the class into vertical row teams (列). Move a desk to the front of the classroom, one desk for each team. Students will come to the desk at the front of the classroom to "fish" for their team in a given amount of time. I usually do 5 to 10 seconds. The students will all fish at the same time for their team. When the time is up the ALT or JTE should ask each team "How many fish"? Then the ALT or JTE can write the number of fish on the blackboard for each team to keep score. Continue until all students have had a turn to fish at the front of the classroom.

*Make sure students do not fling the fishing rods around as it could hit someone with the magnet. They should be gently fishing for this game.
