There are possibly similar activities already on here. So I hope I'm not stepping on any toes! After browsing just a little bit, I felt inspired to make my own activity for this. So thanks for the inspo! I also just have my own aesthetic, so do note that this has an Autumn theme. My students got very competitive and creative. I felt like it is also simple enough for those lower-level students, who usually can't write a sentence by themselves.
Materials needed:
Computer to present the ppt
White boards and markers
Paper explaining points (optional)
Timer (optional)
Flow of the lesson
I started by presenting the first 5 slides. I let kids choose which fruit they think is different and elicit reasons from them. This just makes sure that everyone knows how to use "because". At this point I also make it clear that there is no wrong answer, but that the reason why really matters.
Game instructions
I let the class divide into groups of 4-5 students as usual.
I gave them 3 minutes to write their answers on the whiteboards. Maybe your students are a bit faster. Mine really seemed to disagree about what to choose. I asked them to write a full sentence eg: Doraemon is different because he is a robot.
I count down and they all reveal their answers at the same time.
The point system works as follows:
* 1 Unique answer = 3 points
* 2 or 3 teams with the same answer = 2 points
* 4 or more teams with the same answer = 1 point
* Interesting sentence +1 bonus point
I printed out this point system on B4 and just put it up on the board for reference after explaining it.
I noticed that some did really not use objective reasons. So judge at your own discretion.
Obviously adjust the point system however you want to, but that bonus point is a huge motivator.
I would also recommend having a timer and sticking to it. I noticed that some wait till the last 10 seconds, to try and see what others have written.
Enjoy!
I like the PPT it is simple and neat. Thank you! It would be more helpful if you can add a couple more examples. To help some low English level.
I agree, it's a nice visually simple PPT that looks great. No gifs or over-saturation.
You need to fix the spelling of "program" though on a couple of slides!
