Activity

Family Feud

Students guess what their classmates said was the most ____ .

Note: This game takes at least 2 classes to run, and it works better with large classes.

Class 1:
● Have students fill out the survey or ask an English teacher to have students fill it out
● The survey questions I used were:
1. What is the most famous place in Japan?
2. Who is the most important person in Japan?
3. What is the most delicious Japanese food?
4. What is the most famous Japanese food?
5. Who is the most popular character?
6. What is the most popular singer/ band?
7. What is the most difficult subject at school?
8. What is the most difficult English word to say ?
9. What is the most useful thing you bring to school?
10. What is the most useful thing in your house?

● Fill in the PowerPoint with the top 3 answers for each category. You might have to combine/ interpret answers if the results are close (for example, in one of my classes the same number of students wrote "soba" and "ramen" so I combined them as "noodles")
● Write out the answers for yourself, to consult as you play the game

Class 2:
● Draw a scoreboard and a strike board on the blackboard. (I asked my JTE to keep track of these while I ran the game)
● Have the students make groups and pass out whiteboards (optional) and worksheets
● In the original game the first group to guess a correct answer goes first, but since there were 7 groups in my class and I wanted each group to get a turn I had them do Janken to decide what order to go in.
● Start the PowerPoint
● Title slide→ Start Game→ Round 1→ click to reveal the question
● Give the students some time to brainstorm answers (on whiteboards or just talking)
● The first group guesses answers until either:
A. all 3 answers are guessed
B. they get 3 strikes (incorrect answers), and the question passes to the next group
C. To speed things up I would move to the next group if students took too long to answer
I had them guess in English for additional practice (ex: "Is Tokyo the most popular place in Japan?")
● After every question make sure to give the students a few seconds to write down the answers on their worksheets
● If there`s time left after finishing the game, have the students complete the worksheet (in my 45 minute classes the PowerPoint took up all/ almost all the time)

Worksheet questions:
What answer surprised you?
ex: I was surprised that ___ is the most famous place in Japan.
1.
2.
3.
What answer did not surprise you?
ex: I was not surprised that ___ is the most delicious Japanese food.
1.
2.
3.

    Inspired A BIG survey!

This is great. I used to do something similiar in the lesson after doing a survey. Each group would get one chance to answer the question. If it was on the board they'd get 2 points. If not they got 1 point. Continue until each group had a chance or all three TOP answers were uncovered.

Also I noticed when I exited the activity then started it again the questions I'd already checked where still checked as done. None of my activities can do that. Did you use a micro or is there a way of doing that with powerpoint so it remembers stuff?

Thanks! Im still new to PowerPoint animation so Im not sure why its doing that, sorry... I think theres supposed to be a way to change the format for links, but I wasn`t able to figure out how. My school only has Japanese PowerPoint so it can be a little hard to read and navigate.

Maybe somebody formatted it that. I’m the same. I can barely read anything so figuring things out is kind of a search and click adventure.

The original file is absolutely huge. 16mb all because of some animations that add nothing to the useability or enjoyability of this. I was able to trim it down massively to only 615kb! I runs smoothly and and simply with no loss of functionality. If anyone wants that file please contact me.

16mb isn’t all that big. As a rule I used to aim for 24mb and lower so I could use Gmail to email my activities to my ipad without needing to use a google drive. If adding some animations or sounds makes an activity more amusing, even if it’s just for yourself I say go for it.

Jiminy if you made a streamlined version you could post it to the site and link it to this activity. I think different versions are always useful.

My 2nensei just did comparatives/superlatives so I proposed this to my JTE as a review. This game was a big hit! The students were asking for more questions at the end! I'm also very nosey so I enjoyed reading everyone's '(anonymous) answers xd
