After giving each student one card, which is kept secret (they use the name circled), students play Janken with their friends and the loser makes two statements: I can... I can't...
The winner then guesses who that student is: Are you...? If they guess right they win the card, if wrong they walk away with nothing.
Students with no cards should come to the teachers and ask for a new card, but they must ask for it in English.
Play until students start losing interest.
VARIATIONS:
One variation is, in groups students get 10 cards per group. One student is group banker and the other students have one card each to start. When students lose or win a card they return to the bank to get or give the card to or from the bank. Therefore students will always have only one card.
TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:
This game can be applied to many grammar forms across the first year.
A good game for 2nd and 3rd years just to play.
