Nothing special, just sharing something I've been doing in my 6th grade classes that the students really like. I usually do this at the end of class when there's extra time.
First I write the name of a song on the board. I have the students write the song in their New Horizon textbooks at the back on pages 86-89, wherever they have an open space to use. Then I write a word or phrase on the board (often, but not always, just the title), check its meaning, have the students repeat it after me, and have them watch the song and count how many times they hear that word or phrase. Then after the song I reveal the answer.
I have them write the song in their textbook in case they want to look the song up later at home, then they will be able to (hopefully they won't lose their textbook lol).
Songs I've used:
-Daft Punk, One More Time (Start with this one. It's universally loved by all my classes. I even hear 3rd and 4th graders singing it because I assume their older siblings showed it to them at home)
-Michael Jackson, Beat It (cool video but kind of hard to catch what Michael says tbh)
-Ylvis, What Does the Fox Say (this one makes the whole class laugh throughout)
-Carly Rae Jepson, Call Me Maybe (a classic banger, twist ending)
-BTS, Butter (for the KPop stans, shows Korean dudes singing completely in English)
The goal is to have it be fun, so I make sure the music video is interesting even if you can't understand most of the words. Also I really recommend doing this with a video and not just listening w/o a video. It works much better that way. For Elementary school it plays best with 6th graders, and would probably also be fun for jr. high students as well.
I tried this activity and it was really difficult to get the kids into it, even with music I knew they liked. I guess my problem was that I did the activity with Junior High School 3rd graders, who aren't genki to begin with. Maybe I'll try this with ES 6th graders.
Maybe the concept of watching a music video at school is more novel for Elementary schoolers.
For a couple months they would say "one more time!" at the start of class because they wanted to watch the next part of Interstella 5555. If there's lots of extra time I've shown them the continuation of the movie without them having to listen for anything because tbh it's not great for listening after the first song. Never got past the 4th song tho hah.
