The Harry Potter Train Game

A fun speaking activity set in Harry Potter's world of magic where the students can apply their direction-giving skills from page 28 of Sunshine 3 (2021).

Start the PowerPoint presentation.

The first five slides explain the premise of the game. The students have just gotten accepted to Hogwarts School of Magic - how rather exciting! They must now navigate their way through the complex railway systems to get to Hogwarts Station.

Slides 6 and 7 revise the phrases from page 28.

The game begins from Slide 8. In pairs, have the students apply the phrases from page 28 to get to the various stations. There are four different stations that the students must get to.

Hi, I think this is an excellent activity! I changed it a bit to match the New Horizon 2 text. I will post my version as well, I hope you don't mind. Thank you again!

I was excited to use this in the classroom, so a big thanks. However, when I ran it the first time it was a near disaster! Grade 2 JHS found it hard (as did the JTE). I could not work out precisely why. It seemed to be the fact that the model dialogue means you have to change trains and then say how many stops it is from that starting point (which is exactly the target dialogue in the text book!). She stopped the activity and told me her and the boy she had been role playing with did not understand it and the students were confused. I tried to explain and she said she understood then we restarted the activity. However, at the end when we asked a good student to come up and role play the final time, she again started asking me questions about the map. I reran it with the second grade 2 class and it went better: I broke the dialogue down into two parts and redid the colour coding. It seemed to help. A great activity (they loved the music as well!) but it might not go as you expect!
